Jewelry Armoires

Where does an avid jewelry collector keep her treasures? If you are like me, a little box on a dressing table just doesn't hack it. I have more pieces of jewelry than I do pieces of clothing! I have to have a BIG jewelry box. Hello, the jewelry armoire!

This is by far the most beautiful and brilliant piece of furniture ever invented, right up with the bed. It comes in many different shapes and styles, but it has one essential function: to hold and organize jewelry! It is a truly remarkable invention, and I kiss the feet of the person who invented it. I love armoires. I have one--much like the one above but in cherry wood and with more drawers--but the damn thing is in storage in Atlanta, filled with a lot of jewelry that I really miss...

Here in Australia it is hard to find these amazing creations. When I do see one every so often, it is too small; like someone took it home as carry-on luggage after a trip to the U.S.

I would guess that they were an American invention.
Americans, the biggest shoppers and hoarders in the world, would have the most need of them.
Damn you bloody lucky American bi#$*&s! There are so many wonderful designs available over there--all of these pics came off of mostly Ebay listings (active now if you are interested!) Baaah!

This type of armoire is a fancier version of a very similar styled one I remember seeing Wal-Mart sell for about $50. It is the type I see here now and then.

This one...*drools* is the kind I would most like to have in my dream bedroom, along with an antique Chinese bed (one of my life goals). Or this heavenly one....

Colonial style: My mother would like this style. But she doesn't collect jewelry...

For the minimalist...Maiki would prefer I get one like this...

For the country home....

Or the Parsian Apartment...

Sometimes an armoire can be made from a cabinet:

Like I made mine:

It's pretty ugly but it keeps my jewelry organized!!

It was my toiletries cabinet at my old house before I moved in with Maiki. I use to have my jewelry displayed all over my bedroom, but now that I have to share my bedroom with a man, I have to reign in all the girlyness.
How I set it up:
On the top, I like to display brooches in a pink Mikasa dish next to a row of hair-pins and hair flowers. I hung a mesh earring holder to the inside of the door. I lined the top shelf with a velvet ring cushion, easily available at jeweler's supply shops or maybe on Ebay.

I nailed rows of nails in along the tops of each shelf. Necklaces were hung in the top shelf, bracelets in the second. The cuff and elastic bracelets are also in the second shelf. The third shelf is for boxed jewelry and sunglasses. I have plans to paint over this cabinet with black and silver and line the door with a pretty fabric or paper, but for now, like most of the bedroom, it's just a functional piece of furniture.

Will some savvy American business person please, please start exporting armoires to Australia? I will gladly be your Australian importer!!

  1. I have my mothers that she got from my father as an engagement present. I have always coveted it! it has 8 drawers down each side, each lined with blue velvet, in the centre is a mirrored compartment to hang your necklaces on. It then has two concentina doors with glass that close it off.

    Great post

WOW I never even knew these things existed!! I don't have *stacks* of jewelry but I think I NEED one of these.
I wonder if you can get Danish style ones (probably not)...that would suit my house. Hmm. And they have enough vintage appeal to appease (heh) the boyfriend.

(that first one is my favourite :-D )
